MIPCOM NEWS: Australian first-time filmmaker Lara Damiani is in Cannes this week looking for international broadcast partners, specifically from the UK, for her documentary Tibet’s Cry for Freedom (1×52′).
Narrated by Australian actress Kerry Armstrong (SeaChange, Bed of Roses), the film explores contemporary Tibetan history, issues of human rights and what it means to be a refugee.
Cry for Freedom was recently purchased by New Zealand public broadcaster TVNZ. It has aired at festivals in France and Finland and will screen in the US later this month.
Damiani, who is based at the Screen Australia booth at Mipcom, financed the 12-month shoot with cash reserves, bank loans and by selling clothes and furniture, as well as with the help of donations.
“This project is evidence of what can be achieved when people who really believe in something come together to make it happen,” she said. “It’s also a sign of the support for the ideals of freedom, peace, truth and justice.”
