Updated 7 Oct,1225hrs Nine people were killed, 19 others were injured and 171 homes toppled in Yangyi, a village hardest hit by Monday’s quake in Damshung County, according to a latest report by Chinese state media. Another 20 residential houses were destroyed in neighboring Nyemo County but no casualties were reported. In Gedar, a town with more than 4,000 people in Damshung County, nearly every house had cracked walls after the quake hit at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
Dharamshala October 6 – A strong earthquake measuring 6.6 on Richter scale hit Damshung (Ch:Damxung) in Tibet at 4:30 p.m. Monday. The epicenter was at 29.8 degrees north and 90.3 degrees east, 82 km away from Lhasa, according to Xinhua, China’s official media.
There is no immediate report of casualties or damage to property. Tibet’s seismological department sent a team to the quake-hit area.
According to the US Geological Survey, another quake measuring 5.1, likely an aftershock, hit in roughly the same area 15 minutes later.
An 8.0-magnitude quake struck southwestern Sichuan province on May 12, flattening entire towns and leaving more than 87,000 people dead or missing.
Early on Monday, a moderate earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 hit China’s far northwest, just minutes after a 6.3-magnitude quake hit just over the Chinese border in neighboring Kyrgyzstan.
