New Delhi, September 2 – Tibetans from local settlements of Majnukatilla and Bodh Vihar gathered at Jantar Mantar on the occasion of the 48th anniversary of Tibetan Democracy. The exiled Tibetan Government has been functioning democratically after the Dalai Lama declared a social equality for Tibetans and their governance in 1960 soon after he escaped to India.
Special Guest for the event was Kiren Rijiju, MP, Lok Sabha (lower house of the Indian Parliament). Representative of the Dalai Lama Tempa Tsering was the Chief Guest, and speakers included Choekyong Wangchuk, MP, Tibetan Parliament in Exile and Acharya Yeshi Phuntsok, MP, Tibetan Parliament in Exile.
Kiren Rijiju who is also the National President of the Trans Himalayan Parliamentarians Forum said, “Tibet may not be free right now, but its identity will always remain thanks to your struggle and endeavors. The endurance, strength and power comes from the belief in the freedom of Tibet and human rights.”
Choekyong Wangchuk gave a detailed account of campaigns and activities undertaken by the Delhi Chapter of the Tibetan Solidarity Committee since March and announced the conclusion of Committee’s operation across the nation.
He told the media, “It has been some 172 days (six months) since the unrest in Tibet and our tireless crusade against the Chinese system. As winter draws closer a large number of Tibetans who are sweater sellers need to get ready for their winter business. It would be unfair to their families if they are asked to be here during their commercial season. It is also difficult for participants from different regions to come to Delhi and demonstrate. It has been six months and we have had a huge and very dedicated turnout from all over India.” He added, “What becomes of the Tibetan Solidarity Committee needs to be seen at the Tibetan Parliamentary Caucus scheduled to be held from 4-8th at Dharamsala. As of now we terminate all activities of the Committee until further notice.”
The shops and restaurants owned by Tibetans remained closed for the day.
