The regional Tibetan youth congress and the regional Tibetan women’s association organized a black day against the opening ceremony of Beijing 2008 Olympics. More than thousand Tibetans from Darjeeling and the adjoining areas of Ghoom, Sonada, Pokhreboong, Maneybangjang and Takdah gathered at chowrasta adorning black outfits and black flags.
Pamphlets were distributed to the tourists and the local people as the protest slowly wound its way through the streets of Darjeeling town and finally ended at chowrasta with the “Mimang Langlu” (song of people’s uprising) followed by the Tibetan and the Indian national anthem after which all the people proceeded to the community hall for a prayer service.
There will be a candle light vigil later in the evening and all the Tibetans and their supporters will participate in a black out protest in which they will switch off all the lights in their homes everyday from 8pm to 9pm till the last day of the Olympics.
On the 7th of august, the RTYC Darjeeling sent a letter to the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh through the district magistrate appealing to pressurize the Chinese government on the Tibetan issue.

Shillong
According a report by PTI hundreds of Tibetans in Shillong staged a protest march organized by local Tibetan Association through the main thoroughfares of the city on Friday. Most of them are came in black dress and were carrying placards saying ‘Give Peace a Chance’, ‘Save Tibet’ and ‘Stop Killing Tibetans’.
“We condemn China’s reluctance to resolve the Tibetan issue despite the riots and death of hundreds of innocents and the absence of palpable measures taken by international bodies,” a statement by Tibetan Association said.
On August 10, the community members will stage a candle light procession to express their solidarity with the people in Tibet, it said.
“Tibetans in the city would wear black clothes as a sign of protest and will switch off electricity in their residences from 8 pm to 9 pm throughout the Olympic Games,” the statement added.
