Kathmandu, April 15 – Over 150 Tibetan volunteers and activists in Nepal recommenced their peaceful protest against China with a fresh demonstration in front of the Chinese Consulate at Hattisar in Kathmandu on April 15 demanding China stop the mass murder and violation of human rights in Tibet among others. This is their first demonstration in Nepal after they temporarily stopped on 3rd April due to the Constituent Assembly elections in Nepal.
A total of 127 Tibetans were arrested at 1400 hrs and released around 2100 hrs. Among the arrestees, 44 female and 60 male were detained at Metropolitan Armed Police Force Group No.2 Barrack, Maharajgunj and another 13 men were detained at Anamnagar Police Station with 11 men held separately at Kamal Pokhari Police Station.
At 1300 hrs, a group of 20 Tibetans started protesting in front of the Chinese Consulate and were taken away within minutes by the Nepal Police, a second group followed them and protested in similar manner from other side of the street and were arrested. Subsequently a third batch of 120 followed in two buses and continued with their protest in front of the Chinese Consulate. The police refrained from attacking the protestors but they were seen pulling and kicking those who resisted arrest. After an hour, the police finally managed to take away the pro-Tibet activists.
Meanwhile, the ongoing 24 hr relay fasting organized by the Nepal Tibetan Solidarity Forum entered its third day. Nepal Police briefly visited the venue at Swayambhu Hill but did not disrupt the ongoing dissent. The Forum has also resumed organizing daily prayer sessions at the Tibetan Community Center in Boudha from Sunday and over 300 Tibetans have been attending regularly.
