The Prince of Wales is due to meet a senior politician from China for a private meeting.
State Councillor Tang Jiaxuan, along with a delegation from the Chinese embassy including the Chinese ambassador, will speak to Charles at Clarence House.
The State Councillor is equivalent to a deputy prime minister.
Before becoming the State Councillor in 2003, Mr Tang was China’s foreign minister.
Last month, the Free Tibet campaign group sparked discussion about Charles’ attitude towards the Beijing Olympics when it wrote to the Prince urging him to boycott the games in protest at what it described as China’s “human rights abuses” in Tibet.
But Clarence House said that Charles had not been invited to attend this summer’s games in the first place.
A spokeswoman confirmed that this remains the case.
She added that the meeting is a planned engagement and is not related to any reported speculation surrounding the Olympics.
Charles, an outspoken supporter of exiled Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama, has attended just one other Olympics, when his sister the Princess Royal competed at Montreal in 1976.
The Princess Royal is one of Britain’s three members of the International Olympic Committee and has been to the two previous Olympics.
