Darien (Connecticut), January 2: Darien High School students and alumni will host a concert to raise awareness for the genocide and human rights crisises in Darfur and around the world at the Darien Depot on Friday. Proceeds will be split between UNICEF’s Darfur Fund and Students for a Free Tibet.

The concert, which will begin at 6:30 p.m., will be preceded by a free screening at 4 p.m. of “Cry of the Snow Lion,” a documentary that sheds light on the situation in Tibet from its hostile take-over to the present day. Educational materials about the situation in Darfur and Tibet will be available during the show. The concert will include several performances, including pieces by local artist Matt Ferrer and DHS graduate, Tyler Bussey, who will perform with his former band and Wind Behind the Wall. Bethany Olson, executive director of the Rising Group, Inc., a Stamford-based non-profit organization dedicated to spreading hope and empowering people to fix their communities, will be singing a few songs with the band, History of Lovers.

At a similar concert held last December, DHS students raised nearly $5,000. During the final performance, Janice Marzano, program director of the Depot, came on stage to rally the remaining crowd members to raise the final $200 to break the $4,000 barrier. Over 300 people attended last year’s show.

Doors open for the concert at 6 p.m. Admission is $5 at the door. Donations are highly encouraged and will be accepted inside. Pizza, by the slice or by the pie, will also be auctioned off.

For questions about the concert or to make donations, contact Keith Kolakowski at kkolakow@bucknell.edu or Janice Marzano at the Darien Depot at depotct@optonline.net or at 655-0812.
