Munich, October 7: This weekend, Buddhist supporters including Tibetans and Tibet supporters in cities around the world continued their protest rallies and prayer vigils for them. Around 300 supporters participated in a candle vigil near the biggest university in Munich/Germany in solidarity with the peaceful protest led by Buddhist monks in Myanmar.
The Buddhist faithfuls have rallied, chanted and meditated in cities worldwide for the monks, who were shot, beaten, tear-gassed and arrested last week after they started refusing alms from soldiers and marched against the military Junta regime. They demand of human rights, the release of all the political prisoners and ask the Chinese government to support the imposition of sanctions.
The Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader in exile and the world’s most prominent Buddhist, said he prayed for the early release of fellow Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, the opposition leader under house arrest who has advocated non-violent resistance in line with her Buddhist beliefs.
The Dalai Lama may understand the plight of Myanmar’s monks better than most — he and thousands of his followers fled to India in 1959 after China’s People’s Liberation Army brutally crushed a Tibetan uprising in Lhasa.
