His Holiness the Dalai Lama speaks of right to happiness as 10,000 listen
Hamburg: Welcomed like a pop star by a crowd of 10,000, the the Dalai Lama, 72, lectured in a tennis stadium in the German port city of Hamburg on how to practice non-violence and learn peace.
“Every person has the right to live a happy life,” said the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism and Nobel peace prize laureate. “Whether they manage to do depends on their inner attitude.”
In western nations, there were many people who were unhappy despite material prosperity.
“That is why we have to develop positive feelings such as love, sympathy and tolerance, so as to oppose the negative feelings such as hatred and anger.”
He was speaking at a Hamburg venue which hosts the annual German Open tennis tournament and has been booked as the main venue for a congress of Buddhists from 32 nations.
The Dalai Lama, who was awarded the Nobel peace prize in 1989 for his efforts to achieve a non-violent solution to the Tibetan problem, arrived in Hamburg on Thursday on a 10-day visit.
In Beijing, the Chinese Foreign Ministry accused the Dalai Lama on Friday of trying to divide Tibet and warned Germany not to give him “a platform to conduct his separatist activities.”
