New York: June, 27: An eight-day, 100 mile “March for Tibet’s Independence” began today with a brief function in front of China’s Consulate in New York (52o 12th Ave).

Taktser Rinpoche along with his wife Kunchok Norbu helped launch the march from the Chinese consulate to Independece Hall in Philadelphia. Unexpectedly, so many young Tibetans have turned up to participate in the march.

The march is being organised by International Tibet Independence Movement (ITIM) co-founded by Rinpoche and Professor Larry Gerstein (President of ITIM) in 1995.

The organising leaders are to deliver a letter to the Consulate asking China, in part, to end its’ illegal occupation of Tibet, Eastern Turkistan, and Southern Mongolia, recognize Taiwan as an independent Nation, and permit Tibetan Teams to participate in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Rinpoche’s son, Jigme Norbu will also take part in the march to Philadelphia. Jigme has been actively involved in six ITIM walks and bicycle rides since 2003.

Taktser Rinpoche will again join the activists at the Independence Hall on July 4, which is commemorated as American Independence Day.

According to Gerstein, since escaping Tibet in 1949, Taktser Rinpoche has been a strong and steady activist for Tibet’s independence.
