Sydney (Australia), June 15: Speaking today at the One Earth tribute concert, on world peace and care for the environment here at the Domain Park, His Holiness the Dalai Lama perceptibly enjoyed addressing the youth audience. He was both witty and inspiring with his logical approach to these huge issues.
Despite heavy downpour throwing a bit of damper on things, which did have some adverse effect on the number of attendees, there were plenty of attendees who were happy to brave the inclement weather for the opportunity of a lifetime, to hear His Holiness speak on such important matters.
He said that he feels that far from the popular theory that human behaviour has deteriorated and our existence doomed, he expressed good hope for the future by giving indicating examples of human behaviour that appear to be improving. He pointed out that, as recently as the last fifty years, there has been a heightened awareness of the need to conserve our environment and habitat of animals. “We crave peaceful solutions to world issues, and violence and war are no longer the initial responses to a conflict” he said.
Green Senator, Bob Brown accompanied the Dalai Lama on stage.
At one point, Mr Bob remarked that His Holiness and the Tibetan culture have contributed so much to the Western world and enquired what can be done in return to help them in gratitude.
In response, His Holiness suggested a trip to Tibet of at least a couple of weeks’ duration to ensure seeing the true situation and observe the situation first hand of what it is in Tibet, or to talk with people who have been and seen the situation for themselves. “Then, to educate those we meet, particularly our Chinese brothers and sisters, as it is well known that they are not always given access to the facts“, he said.
He also suggested supporting dialogue between the Chinese leadership and the Tibetans, which will help to negotiate a mutually beneficial resolution. He said one of the main things Westerners can do is to raise awareness of the Tibetan situation, by peaceful campaigns or writing letters to their politicians and make their opinion heard by their leaderships. He, however, qualified his response by clarifying that he did not instigate this political comment, as it was not planned into his agenda, but he felt it only proper to answer the question once it had been asked.
As a parting gesture, His Holiness donated and blessed a Wollemi pine tree, a species only discovered in recent years with a history possibly dating back to Jurassic times. The tree will be planted in Sydney for future generations to enjoy as a remembrance of his visit.
His Holiness inspired, educated, entertained and charmed his audience, who had demonstrated their immense gratitude, love and respect by attending in the less than enjoyable (but much needed) rain, in order to enjoy the wisdom and company of this master teacher of peace.
It was a truly memorable day, and the deep thoughts on the world, justice and the good feelings of compassion generated by His Holiness’s talks will continue long after this wonderful mentor has left Australia.
