Ten-shuk, a Long Life Request Ceremony for His Holiness the Dalai Lama, will take place in Melbourne on 10 June 2007 (15th day of the fourth month by the Tibetan calendar), during H.H the Dalai Lama’s upcoming Australian visit in June 2007. This ceremony is for the pacification of all obstacles of this 72nd year of His Holiness’ life, and for the fulfillment of all of His Holiness’ benevolent wishes.

With the upcoming visit to Australia by H.H the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan community of Sydney discussed the idea of offering a Ten-shuk with other regional community leaders. Thereafter, all the regional representatives of Tibetan communities held a meeting in Canberra with Mr. Tenzin Phuntsok Atisha, the Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and it was unanimously agreed that this wonderful opportunity be taken to offer a Ten-shuk to His Holiness.

The reasons for offering this Ten-shuk

At this time when we live in a world increasingly troubled by conflicts and perennial diseases, when our own Tibetan situation is in desperation, His Holiness the Dalai Lama continues to work tirelessly throughout all parts of the globe as an unwavering brilliant beacon of hope and inspiration. This year, when His Holiness has turned seventy-two years of age, which is considered a major obstacle year according to Tibetan astrology, all Tibetans residing in Australia and New Zealand felt it very necessary to offer Ten-shuk to His Holiness at this critical point in time to request that His Holiness live long.

The significance

China has banned and continues to ban Tibetans in Tibet from performing any Ten-shuk and prayer ceremonies. In particular, lately the Chinese have started implementing even stricter bans on Tibetans’ spiritual expressions. Keeping these facts in our minds, it is our belief that it would be immensely beneficial if all of us Tibetans living in this part of the world were to unitedly make a Ten-shuk offering to His Holiness in this major obstacle year.

Sydney Tibetans make spiritual preparation
for the upcoming Ten-shuk Offering to His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

In preparation for the upcoming Ten-shuk Request to Live Long, to be offered to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Sydney Tibetan Community held two prayer sessions, where everyone recited in unison, the Om Mani Padme Hum compassion prayer and the Retaining Dharani Prayer of White Tara. These were specifically intended as spiritual preparatory accomplishments, from the part of those making the request.

The first session was held at Dee Why, on 26th May 2007 (the tenth day of Saka Dawa month), and it was attended by majority of the community. Five days later, on the full moon day of Saka Dawa, the second congregation was hosted by Vajrayana Institute, and the session was led by Geshe Dawa and Lava Kyabgoen Rinpoche.

During both these prayer gatherings, the Tibetans maintained a vegetarian diet and alcohol consumption-free behavior.

To make the public aware of His Holiness’ visit to Australia, Sydney Tibetan Community Association has organized a Welcome Peace Walk, by the local Tibetans, this Sunday (3rd June 2007). The walk will start from Dee Why Oval, and will finish at Narrabeen Park. Participants will be waving Tibetan flags, distributing publicity and information leaflets, inviting the public to attend events, and generate maximum media interest and coverage for His Holiness’ visit.
