Ten-shug, a Long Life Request Ceremony for His Holiness the Dalai Lama, will take place in Melbourne on 10 June 2007 (15th day of the fourth month by the Tibetan calendar), during HH the Dalai Lama’s upcoming Australian visit in June 2007. This ceremony is for the pacification of all obstacles of this 73rd year of His Holiness’ life, and for the fulfillment of all of His Holiness’ benevolent wishes.

With the upcoming visit to Australia by HH the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan community of Sydney discussed the idea of offering a Ten-shuk with other regional community leaders. Thereafter, all the regional representatives of Tibetan communities held a meeting in Canberra with Mr Tenzin Phuntsok Atisha, the Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and it was unanimously agreed that this wonderful opportunity be taken to offer a Ten-shug to His Holiness.

The reasons for offering this Ten-shug

At this time when we live in a world increasingly troubled by conflicts and perennial diseases, when our own Tibetan situation is at desperation, His Holiness the Dalai Lama continues to work tirelessly in all parts of the globe as an unwavering brilliant beacon of hope and inspiration. This year, when His Holiness has turned seventy-three years of age, which is considered a major obstacle year according to Tibetan astrology, all Tibetans residing in Australia and New Zealand felt it very necessary to offer Ten-shug to His Holiness at this critical point in time to request that His Holiness live long.

The significance

China has banned and continues to ban Tibetans in Tibet from performing any Ten-shug and prayer ceremonies. In particular, lately the Chinese have started implementing even stricter bans on Tibetans’ spiritual expressions.Keeping these facts in our minds, it is our belief that it would be immensely beneficial if all of us Tibetans living in this part of the world were to unitedly make a Ten-shug offering to His Holiness in this major obstacle year.
