Pune, March 26 – Around 25,000 people showed up to listen to Tibetan spiritual leader – The Dalai Lama’s discourse on the occasion of the 2550th anniversary of Lord Buddha.
Praising India’s tolerance for multi-religion and multi-communities, the Dalai Lama said: “There will be peace and harmony in the whole world. India is a holy nation and honoured in the world because of its diversified culture. When there are differences between communities and religions in rest of the world, it is the only country in which many religions and peoples stay here with peace and harmony.”
The Dalai Lama set up his headquarters in Dharamsala after he and his followers had to flee Tibet to India in 1959.
Now 71, the 1989 Nobel Peace prize winner has renounced his goal of securing Tibet’s independence and opted for its autonomy.
Many Tibetans, well-educated but jobless, are disillusioned by the lack of progress with the Dalai Lama’s “middle way”, a campaign for special autonomy for Tibet as part of China.
