London 12th March 2007: The UK Tibetan Women’s Association (UK-TWA) organised a special event of dedication in the centre of London to mark the 48th anniversary of Tibetan Women’s Uprising in Lhasa in 1959.
On that day, the 12th of March, thousands of Tibetan women took to the streets of Lhasa and courageously voiced opposition against the Chinese occupation and demanded that the Chinese leave Tibet and that Tibet belongs to the Tibetans. It was reported that on that day 18 thousand Tibetans were killed. Among them thousands of women and children were also killed. Leaders were arrested and imprisoned, and many were tortured and died in prisons.
The event in London began with a brief introduction by UK-TWA general secretary, Riga la to the Tibetan women’s movement and with a dedication prayer of 21 Taras, Prayer of the Truth and Offering of Mandala for those brave women who sacrificed their lives for the cause of Tibet and for those who are still suffering under the Chinese occupation.
Tibetan women in exile still continue with their struggle for a free Tibet. The event is to mark the 48th anniversary as well as to show solidarity with Tibetan women’s movement all over the world for a free Tibet.
At the event special prayers were also recited to remove obstacles and to generate positive energy for the long life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Selected prayers include Taking Refuge in Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, Generating Kindness and Compassion, Mantras of the Buddha, Guru Rinpoche and Tara, and Long Life Prayers of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
In a very congenial atmosphere the function was concluded with serving to all those present refreshments and home made Tibetan momo.
