The Regional Tibetan Youth Congress of NY & NJ in conjunction with SFT, Tibetan Association, Tibetan Women’s Association, and US Tibet Committee held a protest demonstration in Washington D.C on October 20th, 2006 condemning the recent shooting at Nangpala by the Chinese border troops resulting in death of a young nun and detention of about 30 Tibetan refugees. This is the second demonstration held in a row after the recent protest event held in New York on October 13th, 2006.
About 300 strong protestors from New York and Boston joined by Washington’s Tibetan community started off their protest rally from Dupon Circle at about 11.30am towards the Chinese Embassy in Washington DC. The protestors carrying Tibetan flags and placards reading ‘China murders Tibetan refugees’, China out of Tibet’, ‘Shame on China’ etc. reached Chinese Embassy around 12.30 pm and continued chanting slogans against the Chinese government for about 4 hours. The event organizers from TYC of NY & NJ, SFT, USTC, and TWA of NY & NJ jointly condemned the recent atrocity by the Chinese troops at Nangpala and called upon the Chinese government for explanation, and further demanded for unconditional release of the detained refugees. The members of the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress also tried to submit a protest memorandum to the Chinese Embassy despite their non response. The day’s event finally concluded with prayers and national anthem.
