People from across the country will head to Amherst and the campus of UB on Monday to see the 14th Dalai Lama. The Tibetan spiritual leader is coming because of the school’s large international student base.

Sherku Sherpa of East Aurora is a Tibetan Buddhist who says he will only have to drive a short distance to see the Dalai Lama. He says others from his native country of Nepal travel days and literally climb mountains for a glimpse of the man who stands for peace and non-violence. On campus Sunday, mulit-colored prayer flags made by faculty and students flapped in the wind near UB Stadium. Workers were setting up chairs in anticipation of 30,000 spectators.

School officials say the Dalai Lama travels with his own security but command centers were stationed close by the stadium. They say people are coming from as far away as California, Seattle, and Canada.
