Tibetan Democracy Day Celebrated in New York

New York, September 4 – In New York, the Tibetan communities from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut observed the 46th Founding Anniversary of Tibetan Democracy Day on September 2nd at Armenian Church with the initiative of the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress of New York and New Jersey. About 500 Tibetans assembled to observe the day with speeches and Tibetan cultural performances.

The morning program began with offering of the Mandala to the portrait of His Holiness the Dalai Lama by the two Chief guests Mr.Tenzin Choeden (NA Chithue) and the Representative for North American Tibetans Mr. Tashi Wangdu. This was followed by the addresses by Mr. Tenzin Kalden the President of RTYC of NY & NJ, and the two Chief guests. Mr. Kalden made an introductory note on the significance of the occasion and stressed on three important issues i.e. importance of supporting one’s own exile government’s efforts and to strive for Tibetan cause, and preservation of one’s own culture and traditions.

North American Tibetan Chithue highlighted on the importance of the democratic system which the Tibetans in Tibet are deprived of, and also expressed his regret over the recent low turnout during the elections for Chithue and Kalon Thripa. He urged the people to avail the opportunity of right to Vote in future elections. He also requested Tibetans to be aware and keep update of the developments on Tibetan issues all the time. Mr. Tashi Wangdu suggested on carrying out social activities that would eventually contribute towards the common welfare of the community, and further stressed on importance of being transparent whenever one is involved in any community service. He also made special reference for dire need of proper guidance and educational counseling of the Tibetan students in American High Schools for better future.

Afternoon program commenced with question/answer session with North American Chithue and the Representative which lasted for about two hours. The audience raised number of questions to the two dignitaries on number of pressing issues ranging from Kashag’s special appeal discouraging the protest activities during Hu Jintao’s visit to the matters pertaining to Tibetan Green Book and New York Tibetan Commuity Hall Projects. The questions were well received by the two dignitaries and also made their best efforts in answering the queries. This was then followed by the most awaited Tibetan songs and dance items from Cholsum troupe, ex Tipa, and other group and individual performances. The day’s program finally ended with vote of thanks by the President of RTYC of NY and NJ.
