Kathmandu, August 4 – Yarlung United, a non-governmental Tibetan organization, organized a solo song contest for school students on their 2nd founding day, at the Everest Hotel in Kathmandu. The participants included Rinzin Pasang from Namgyal Higher Secondary School, Tseten Diky from Songtsen Bhrikuti High School, Tenzin Dhondup from Namgyal Middle Boarding School, Trinley Dolma from Himalayan International Model School and Yangchen Lhamo from Manjugoksha School. The judges were Techung La, a well-known contemporary Tibetan singer, Tsering Gyurmey, another well-known singer and Jampa Kalsang, a Tibetan actor.
The participants sang a compulsory Tibetan song and a song of their choice either in Nepali or English. Rinzin Pasang, a ninth grader from Namgyal Higher Secondary School with his good stage performance and presentation was awarded the winner of the contest by both the judges and the audience votes. He was awarded the winning prize including a check of 10,000 Rupees. Tseten Diky from Srongtsen Bhrikuti High School was the runner up.
The NGO felicitated many Tibetans for achievements in their respective fields; Tashi Tsering La, a Tibetan footballer with both the Tibetan National Team and Nepal National Team and the captain of Manang Marshyangdi Club; Jampa Kalsang La, a famous Tibetan actor who featured in Caravan and Samara to name a couple; and Wangdu Phuntsok La, the principal of Namgyal Higher Secondary School for the school’s excecellent academic results.
Karma Wangchuk, a member of Yarlung United presented two fast Hindi dances followed by performances by Techung La, Jampa Kalsang and Tsering Gyurmey La thus perfectly entertaining the crowd. Tsering Lekchung La, the president of the organization said that their objective is to support and encourage young talents in the Tibetan society. The new President, Mr. Dawa Tsering, gave a brief note on the occasion.
