SHIMLA, August 3 – The Kangra police is investigating the “spy-angle” surrounding two Chinese women arrested recently in Dharamshala for travelling and staying there without valid documents. The Chinese Embassy in Delhi has been informed. The security of the exiled Tibetan leader Dalai Lama has been tightened as a precautionary measure.
Ms Ngai Hun, a 39-year-old Chinese woman, was arrested a few days ago. She said that she had lost her papers in Delhi and reported it to police on 25 January. Though documents were prepared for her return to China, Ms Ngai Hun came to Dharamshala and stayed in various guesthouses with “some foreigners” for the past two months. Although it may be a case of “illegal stay”, police are examining all aspects including her links with other foreigners and some local youths.
Earlier, another Chinese woman Ms Kanchuk Lhamo (63), was arrested from nearby Dolmalinga nunnery at Nurbolinga monastery for the same reasons. She has claimed to be a devotee of the Dalai Lama. Investigations have not revealed any substantial information.
The Kangra superintendent of police told The Statesman that a letter had been issued to all the monasteries and other institutions in the vicinity of the Dalai Lama’s abode McLeodganj asking them to verify the antecedents of all foreigners before providing them accommodation and keep track of their activities. Police have decided to crack down on all unauthorised guesthouses giving shelter to foreign tourists and try to arrest those travelling without valid documents.
