China has welcomed a group of “overseas” Tibetans who arrived in Beijing on July 23 for a ten-day visit in the country.

A report on the official People’s Daily online, sourced from the official Chinese news agency Xinhua said Liu Yandong, a senior official of the Communist Party of China on July 24 met a group of Tibetans living in Europe when they arrived in Beijing.

“The motherland always welcomes patriotic Tibetans,” the report quoted Liu as praising the Tibetans’ for their “patriotism to help develop their hometowns”. Liu Yandong is head of the United Front Work Department of CPC Central Committee.

According to the report, the “overseas” Tibetan group was briefed on the development of the Tibet Autonomous Region and was asked to tell other “overseas” Tibetans about what they saw and heard during their 10-day visit.

The report, however, did not give any details about the identity of the so-called “overseas” Tibetans and it was not clear if the group was expected to visit Tibet as well during their ten-day trip.
