Kathmandu, July 3: The government is reportedly working to send 5,000 Tibetan refugees to United States on humanitarian grounds, a Member of Parliament revealed at the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs and Human Rights Committee today.

“We have heard that necessary documents are being prepared to send 5,000 Tibetan refugees to US,” said Suresh Karki, a UML MP asking the Minister of Foreign Affairs, KP Oli, to clarify the matter, saying, “China is very sensitive on the Tibetan’s issue.” Oli, who was present at the meeting, said, “Nepal is committed to one-China policy, but as travel documents are given to Bhutanese refugees, they are also being given to Tibetan refugees on humanitarian grounds and in special cases. It is not that we are granting travel documents to illegal Tibetan migrants.” He also informed the committee that a deputy foreign minister of China is arriving in Nepal on July 27 and the issue of illegal Tibetan migrants would be taken up with him. “China has always expected Nepal not to treat Tibetan migrants as refugees. This is a serious issue,” Oli added.
