Gangtok, June 11 – Thousands, including monks and people in general, took part in a colourful rally here today to celebrate Saga Dawa, the annual festival that represents the three most important events of the life of Lord Buddha – his birth, enlightenment and nirvana.
According to Tibetan Buddhists on this day in different years of his life Lord Buddha took birth, achieved enlightenment and attained nirvana.
Buddhist monks from different monasteries of Sikkim with a well decorated carriage on their shoulders with a statue of Lord Buddha and the book of his teachings in it led the procession from the Tsuklakhang Monastery through the streets of the town and back.
This rally at Gangtok was one of the highlights of the celebrations to mark the ‘triple blessed festival’ which is considered the holiest of all the Buddhist festivals in the state.
