Dharamshala 31 May- The 14th Assembly of the Tibetan People’s Deputies is most likely to see two chairpersons in five years. The Election Commissioner yesterday suggested that a way out of the stalemate could be to divide the five-year term into two halves so that both the contenders for the post will have two and half years’ term as the Chairperson. This provision, he said, is however not in the Charter.
In a voting done here, 21 deputies voted in favour of two and half year’s term for each contender, 16 deputies were in favour of a reelection and 6 abstained. The deputies will meet again later today to discuss how the decision should be brought into implementation. The Election Commission will then be informed of the developments and will, according to analysts, be brought into confidence.
However, who among the two contenders will be inducted as the Chairperson first is again a matter that may bring the assembly back to yet another stalemate if a voting is done, say analysts. Strangely enough, this will be the first time that the Tibetan parliament will have a Chairperson without a majority.
