Prague, March 10 (CTK) – About 80 people gathered in front of the Chinese embassy in Prague today, the 47th anniversary of the suppression of the Tibetan uprising against Chinese occupation in protest against violation of human rights in Tibet.

They signed a letter of protest, addressed to the Chinese ambassador, and lit candles in commemoration of the Tibetans who ended up in prison because of their opinions and religious faith.

The protest was staged by the Czech branch of Amnesty International (AI).

Like every year, the protesters attempted to hand their letter for the ambassador to the embassy staff, but they failed again. No one reacted to their ringing the door bell.

“We´re sorry at China, which wants to be a significant player on the international scene, being unwilling to start discussion,” AI´s Eva Dobrovolna told CTK.

The protest organisers said they believe that the Beijing Olympics, scheduled for 2008, could change the situation for the better. According to Dobrovolna, China should prepare for the visitors to the games asking about human rights.

Some of the protesters carried Tibetan flags, other lit candles and fixed the portraits of Tibetan political prisoners and victims on a fence opposite the embassy building.

The demonstrators finally left for a post office to post their letter for the Chinese ambassador.

For many years now, activists and international organisations have been pointing to the imprisoning of people in China because of their religion, to the torture of prisoners and to the existence of slave labourers´ camps.
