On 15th January 2006, The Regional Tibetan Youth Congress of NY&NJ has organized a debate in New York City for North America Chithue candidates in front of nearly 300 Tibetans and most of them were young generation. It was a day of full of hopes and promises for the cause of Tibet. Debate participants were the two official candidates representing North America for 14th ATPD. They were Mr. Tenzin Chidden La (current chithue) and Mr.Ngodup Tsering La (Ex-chithue).Debate was presided over and being moderated by Mr. Zurkhang Karma Gyatso La.
Truly a democracy in action was started exactly at 1.30PM with a loud singing of Tibetan National Anthem. There after followed by welcome speech by the president of RTYC of NY&NJ Mr. Tenzin Kalden La, who expressed the importance of the debate in our exile community to promote an awareness of meaningful democracy and make the most out of voting rights to elect a deputy of our people who represents the integrity and shows high vision on the just cause of Tibet. Debate was categorized into two sessions:
- CHITHUE’S ROLE AND RESPONSIBLITIES
- TIBETAN POLITICAL ISSUES
The selection committee summarized the questions from public which we received via email and put up the questions based on collective subjects of many questions. Feedback from the debate was very encouraging and the aspiring candidates showed and made all the Tibetans to do more for Tibet. Final session of putting questions from the floor was given and the candidates answered them with respect to all the individuals. The democracy in action came to an end that day with thank you speech by Gen. Secretary Ms Tenzin Dolma La emphasizing the public to make the right choice for our country.
