McLeod Ganj October 20 – The Students for a Free Tibet and Kunphen Centre for Substance Dependence are holding a rock concert tomorrow at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts. The concert, says SFT India President Tenzin Choeying, is an attempt to create awareness about AIDS and drug addiction in our society.

“We have seen a rise in the number of AIDS patients in our society and drug addiction and alcoholism has become a commonplace today”, says Dolma Choephel, the director of Kunphen.

The organizers had earlier decided to allow free passes but owing to the lack of funds and failure to get good sponsors for the event, it was decided to allow entry on fee. The organizers say that the performing band has been called from Delhi and a good sound system is a must for a professional band like ‘Basement Blues’ to give a good show.

The organizers are bringing the entire sound system and musical equipments from Delhi which has added onto the already mounting expense for the two organizers which remain strong in their pursuit to go ahead with the event despite the lack of funds.

“We want to give the public the real sense of music and what better way of getting the message across than music”, say the organizers.

On asked why they went for a rock show, the organizers has this to say, “drug addiction and alcoholism often lead to juvenile delinquency, so our target group is the younger lot of people, and more so it is a fact that the addicts usually associate themselves to rock stars and bands”.
