Dharamshala – Decks have been cleared for the Federation of Tibetan Cooperatives in India Ltd., a registered independent body of 15 Tibetan cooperatives, to acquire the ownership of the Hotel Tibet in Dharamshala and Gangtok.

As the fledgling federation lacks funds, the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) has decided to lease the hotels for two years, says Jigmey Jungney, head of the agriculture and cooperative unit of the CTA’s Home Department.

“Almost 90% of the transfer works are finished,” Jungney adds.

The federation will also take over the ownership of an export unit based in Delhi, the Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Handicraft.

On request of the federation, the Home Department has already appointed one of its civil servants, Joint Secretary Ngawang Dhondup, as the Central Executive Officer of the federation for a term of two years.

The heads of 15 Tibetan cooperatives from across India are currently in a two-day special general body meet here.

Earlier this June, the federation elected Sonam Paljor as the Chairman and Pema Delek as the Vice-Chairman, along with other members of its first board of directors.

The cooperatives are located in Bylakuppe, Hunsur, Kollegal, Mundgod, Orrisa, Mainpat, Bhandara, Tenzingang, Tezu, Miao, Sonada, Ravangla, Ladakh and Dharamshala.
