Dharamshala, August 26 – The Basic Education Policy will be implemented up to primary level of all the 79 Tibetan schools in India, Nepal and Bhutan within three years.
And in five years, 70% of the 1650 teachers of the Tibetan schools will have received a crash-course on the Basic Education Policy.
These were announced here today by Tsering Phuntsok and Chung Tsering, the two spokespersons of the Department of Education of the Central Tibetan Administration, at a monthly briefing to the official media.
After reviewing the state of Tibetan education in exile, the Education Department formulated a basic education policy “based on the actual needs of the exiled Tibetans”.
The Assembly of the Tibetan People’s Deputies approved the policy in September last year. [For complete text of the Basic Education Policy, see March-April 2005 issue of Tibetan Bulletin.]
A model school, which will make full implementation of the new education policy, has already been constructed here.
The inauguration of the school, earlier agreed on 14 September, is now deferred to 10 October.
Other Developments
- A sub-office of the career counselor has now been inducted at Mundgod. The office will provide career guidance in all the Tibetan schools in South India.
- This September, a select group of teachers from Tibetan schools in North-East India will be trained in career counseling.
- Recently published Tibetan version of the mathematics and science textbooks (presently in English) of standard six has been distributed. The Education Department is currently working on the translation of the mathematics textbooks of standard four and seven.
