TYC General Secretary, Mr. Tsultrim Dorjee Chunang represented Tibet at the International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY) Asia-Pacific Committee Meeting, which was held in Bangkok , Thailand from 9 th to 12 th June 2005. Over 40 delegates represented the conference from 15 different countries of Asia-Pacific.
The first Asia Pacific Progressive Youth Forum (PYF) in Bangkok , Thailand was projected by the International Union of Socialist Youth to establish a platform for progressive, socialist, social democratic and labour youth organizations in the region.
In the formal inaugural of the conference Mr. Jaral Dittapichai, Assembly of the Poor, Thailand , addressed the gathering, followed by the speech of Mr. Enzo Amendola, Secretary General of International Union of Socialist Youth. Later TYC delegate presented the latest publication of TYC’s response to China’s White Paper on Tibet, the book titled “Tibet: The Gap Between Fact and Fabrication” to the IUSY Secretary General Mr. Enzo Amendola and to Ms. Jacinda Ardern, IUSY Vice President of Asia Pacific Co-ordinator and the delegates of the Meeting.
The main theme of the IUSY Asia-Pacific Committee meeting was on “Democracy for Sustainable Development” and in the four days conference, the delegates had extensive deliberation of the IUSY political topics including Democratization as the key to Sustainable Development, Action for Democracy: the Media as an Activist tool, Political Campaign organizing, Campaigning for Democracy, Globalization and the Environment, Empowering Communities, Elimination Trafficking in Women etc. The delegates also discussed upon the amendments for the first IUSY draft on Sustainable Development and moreover the committee members decided to organise campaign on the ‘ World Refugee Day’ to mark the event. In the previous Asia-Pacific Committee meeting held in Chile, the IUSY has launched a website on refugees http://www.homeiswhere.org/ as a part of its campaign to help the millions of people living in refugee camps and to bring an end to the conflict and persecution that has led them to become homeless. A theme on the state of Tibetan refugees is one of the primary concern and the agenda of the website.
During the Conference, TYC representative Mr. Tsultrim Dorjee Chunang presented a Country report on Tibet relating to Chinese illegal occupation of Tibet and its ongoing repressions in Tibet, massive population transfer, environmental destruction, militarization of Tibet and the violation of human rights including the denial of educational rights in Tibet. In the conclusion remark, TYC delegate thanked IUSY committee members for their unstinted support for the Tibet’s Independent movement and further urged for their unwavering support to help end the sufferings and the plight of Tibetan people. Besides Mr. Dorjee also distributed literatures on Tibet among the delegates and deliberated the young leaders including representative from Taiwan Labour Front, Young Japanese Socialists, Young Democratic Socialists from Hong Kong, New Zealand Young Labour, Phillipines Akbayan Youth, All Burma Student League etc. on the Tibetan plight and the struggle.
On the final day of drafting of IUSY Asia-Pacific Committee Meeting, several resolutions were passed including the resolution on Tibet. At the time of TYC delegate’s presentation and proposal of nine-point proposed resolution on Tibet, the Malaysian Youth Party (DAPSY) opposed the 1 st ( To accept Tibet as an independent State and condemn the illegal occupation of Tibet ) and the 3 rd ( Pushing its members to recognize the India-based Tibetan government in exile, headed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama ) proposals of resolution. The move was strongly and effectively countered and debated by Mr. Dorjee who briefed the Committee and the delegates of the true picture of Tibet’s Independence and the ongoing facts. Mr Dorjee’s comment received a unanimous support of the delegates, particularly the General Secretary of IUSY, Mr. Enzo Amendola, who disagreed with the DAPSY’s statement on Tibet saying, “Tibet’s issue is one of the major concern of IUSY striving and seeking for early solution”. Thus finally IUSY unanimously adopted nine-point resolutions on Tibet.
