The Tibetan Women’s Association (TWA) is holding a candle light vigil at three different areas in Dharamsala today to mark the 10th anniversary of China’s abduction of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, the 11th Panchen Lama of Tibet. The members of TWA’s regional chapters worldwide will hold similar vigils in 26 cities and towns.

The case of Panchen Lama is an attack to the moral conscience of the international community and all the freedom loving individuals. The abduction and imprisonment of a 6-yr-old for 10 long years despite countless international appeals and complete lack of response from the Chinese leadership is a blatant violation of all existing UN convention on the Rights of the Child of which the PRC is a party.

This vigil for the missing Panchen Lama is an unequivocal _expression of the Tibetan people to continue to question the whereabouts of the Panchen Lama. It is a resounding message of appeal to the UN and the rights bodies to make PRC accountable and investigate the Panchen Lama’s whereabouts and condition. It represents the emotional cry of a mother suffering for her stolen child.

The vigil is part of International Tibet Support Network’s (ITSN) Global Vigil for the freedom of the missing Panchen Lama of Tibet. The “Global Vigil for Tibet’s Panchen Lama,” will take place in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Nepal, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, Venezuela, the UK and the United States
