New York, May 2 – A week-long event to create awareness on Tibet, it history, culture and philosophy concluded successfully yesterday in Concepcion, the second largest city of Chile. The event, which opened on April 26, was organized by the French cultural center, “Alianza Francesa”, of Conception.
The event included an exhibition of Dharamsala-based Tibet Museum’s pictorial story, “A Long Look Homeward”, on the contemporary history of Tibet, the display of Tibetan thangka paintings, screening of video films, and talks on Tibet.
Speaking to El Sur, daily newspaper of Concepcion, the organizers said that they were encouraged to arrange this event by the growing interest among the Chilean people on Tibetan culture, particularly the Buddhist philosophy, which was strengthened by the visit of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Chile in the nineties.
During the week, Martin Scorsese’s “Kundun”, Matthieu Ricard’s “Spirit of Tibet: The Life & World of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche”, Martin Wassell’s “Heart of Tibet”, Tony Miller’s “Mustang: The Hidden Kingdom”, and PBS’s “Red Flag over Tibet” were screened. In addition, Lama Gendun Yarphel, the Spiritual Director of Chokholing Buddhist Center in Santiago gave a talk on the “Birth of Buddhism in Tibet”, Khenpo Phuntsok Tenzin, a resident teacher at Drikung Kagyu Center in Santiago, on the “Essence of Tibetan Buddhism”, Ana Maria Clasing, a Chilean who frequently visits Dharamsala, on “Tibetan Culture in Exile in India”, and Angelica Rockrose on “Introduction to Tibetan Traditional Art”.
Monica Gonzalez, a staff member of the Alianza Francesa who is responsible for organizing the Tibet Week, said that she was very happy to see a stream of visitors coming everyday during the week to learn more about Tibet.
