March 22 – The Tibetan Women Peace Marchers held a Candle Light vigil at the main market of Meerut town yesterday. This group of marchers represents the regional chapters of Tibetan Women’s Association in and around the State of Uttaranchal and is on their way to Delhi.
The candle light vigil in Meerut is the last in the series of programs and public meetings organised by this group for the last two days. TWA president Mrs. B. Tsering led the vigil accompanied by Mrs. Atul Sharma (director, National Amnesty Protection Organization), Mr. KB Bakshi ((president, Kalyanam Karoti),Devindra Kumar Pal (executive member of Bharat Tibbat sahyog Manch) and many Gandhian followers. The procession meandered through the main market area often creating traffic snarls. A candle light vigil was probably a first sight for most of Meerut residents as it was well received by the people considering the amount of attraction and excitement it generated. Mrs. B. Tsering briefed the media persons on the demands put forth by the peace marchers and said the actual negotiation on the future of Tibet should be begin at the earliest.
The solidarity and support of the Gandhian followers for the peace marchers was deeply touching. A woman joined the procession and walked side by side with the marchers with crutches as her only support. The peace marchers were warmly accommodated at the Gandhi Ashram during the previous night.
The branch clinic of Tibetan Medical and Astro Institute hosted a reception for the peace marchers at the end of the procession. The clinic also made a generous contribution of 2 dozen phials of traditional Tibetan massage oil for the marchers.
The marchers left Meerut this morning.
