London Met will offer three full scholarships to outstanding Tibetans to study at the University in 2005/6, in collaboration with the exiled Tibetan government, based in Dharamsala, India. London Met is the only university in Britain to offer a scholarship programme specifically for Tibetans.
The University has offered one scholarship per year to outstanding students of Tibetan origin since 1997, and this year the programme is expanding to include postgraduate students as well as undergraduate students.
Mark Bickerton, director of student recruitment, marketing and communications, said: “Over the past eight years, we have supported a number of students of Tibetan origin at the University and they have all been an excellent addition to our student body. This new programme supports the work of the education ministry of the exiled Tibetan government by promoting education for Tibetan students.”
Ven Karma Gelek Yuthok, secretary of education in the Tibetan government in exile, said: “It’s really great news for our department, administration and school graduates that London Met has agreed to offer three scholarships for Tibetan students for the 2005/6 academic year. We are confident that this generous support will go a long way towards the educational well-being of the Tibetan people.”
Mrs Kesang Takla, from the office of Tibet, London, who has been co-ordinating this programme said: “It is a great pleasure to see the success of London Met’s scholarship programme for Tibetans and we look forward to continued cooperation with the University.”
