“When natural calamity occures. There will be three relief stages. First being Emergency Relief, followed by Temporary Relief and Permanent Relief. Since all the people of India and NIR are so kind and generous, the emergency relief stage is over in India and we are entering the temporary stage. Last, one will be taken care by the government. So I suggest you to look for temporary relief” said Mr Paramasivam, President SMILE.
23 January 2005, its time to leave New Kalpakkam and get back to our colleges. Two-week is not at all short for for us to bring the victims out of shok, tension specially children, and provide them temporary relief.
With the help of informations about Tsunami affected villages and the relief works from different NGOs, we are able to do better relief help with limited fund.
From the first day, our focus is on Temporary Relief. By tweleveth day at New Kalpakkam we understood the need of a school as their old school buildings were damaged by Tsunami. Then we decided to build a thatch school for them. The work starts from shopping building materials. We hired local thatch builders so that we can have a concrete building. It took three days for us the finish this New school. First day we made the basement. This was the most difficult work but we did it. Inorder to cut down the cost we used beams of the damaged house at coast. We made black boards by ourselves. For us it is an opportunity to be a part of every aspect of building.
On Saturday, we finished New School building . It will be use as temporary school until the government provides them a permanent land. This will take at least six months from now.
To honor the volunteers and the villagers for their cooperation we organise opening ceremony of this new school. At opening ceremony, we invited TSAM President Rinzin la and members who really contribute a lot for this temporary relief work. We have invited Mrs Aasha Reddy as our chief guest. She is our core supporter and very active Tibet supportor.
At function, Mr Tashi expressed his love to the victims on behalf of all the Tibetan. He also thanked the cooperation from the villager in the relief work. Further, he said, “all being have a desire for happiness and dislike sufferings. So inorder to relief the Tsunami victims from sadness and unhappiness this ‘TIBETAN FOR TSUNAMI RELIEF’ is innitiated. And for us it is an attempt to practice the basic teachings of Lord Buddha.Inturn Mr Jaganathan, the villager panchayat appreciate and thanked all the Tibetans, particularly VCSS.
After the formal speech, the prizes were distributed to the first three students in Drawing competition held earlier day. Notebooks along with pens were given to all the students of New Kalpakkam. For the young men a set of volly ball uniform and cricket dress was given. The word in front of the unifrom reads “TIBETAN FOR TSUNAMI RELIEF” at back “ SAVE TIBET”. We saw the overwhelemed joy on there face specially the New school was opened by Aunty Aasha Reddy by cutting the ribbon.
With this our temporaty relief work is stoped as we have to get back in out studies. If any one is willing to contribute financially for a long-term project for these victims. Kindly contact us. We’ll make it possible for you after May.
