A charity is today gearing up to welcome a group of 11 Tibetan refugee children who are set to get a whistlestop cultural tour of the UK.

The trip is designed to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Tibet Foundation and the charity is hoping the British public will gain as much from the visit as the Tibetan children.

Between January 24 and February 14 the children, aged between 13 and 15-years-old, and two of their teachers will visit schools, art centres, theatres and the Royal Opera House to showcase traditional Tibetan songs, music and dance in cultural exchanges with other young people.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama is backing the trip and has called the children taking part “the future seeds of Tibet”.

The Tibet Foundation’s 20th Anniversary Celebrations are aimed at increasing awareness of Tibetan culture in the West and will highlight the importance of education for exiled Tibetan refugee children.

A spokesperson for the charity said: “This is a historic first and the children will gain a valuable insight into Britain’s education, culture and social values.”

The children will visit Newcastle, Glasgow, Llangollen, Liverpool, Manchester, Bridgwater, Devon, London and East Sussex.
