A truck loaded with cargo and passengers overturned on a mountain highway in eastern Tibet, killing 10 people on board and injuring 11 others, the official Xinhua News Agency reported Thursday.
The accident Wednesday evening came as 29 people were riding aboard the vehicle near the town of Ngamring, lying about 360 kilometers (224 miles) east of Tibet’s capital, Lhasa, at an altitude of about 4,000 meters (13,123 feet).
Eight people died on the spot and two others passed away in a hospital, Xinhua said. It identified the driver as a government employee from a county near Lhasa.
Roads in much of Tibet are little more than mud tracks, often running perilously along the sides of steep cliffs.
Nationwide, China suffers from an epidemic of road deaths with tens of thousands dying each year in accidents blamed on risky driving and badly maintained roads and vehicles.
