Dharamsala, December 5 – The Tibetans living in exile in Dharamsala had a special screening of a film depicting various efforts taken worldover for the release of Tibetan monk Tulku Tenzin Delek facing suspended execution on charges of terrorism.
Made by amateur US filmmaker Elinore Burk with Tibetan activist Tenzin, the film titled “Sentenced to Death” is currently being screened for the residents.
There have been protests across the world, including India, against the death sentence awarded to the Buddhist monk by China. Delek was slated to be hanged last Wednesday.
A Chinese court in 2002 had sentenced Delek and another monk Lobsang Dhondup to death on charges of detonating bombs in the southwest of the country, for illegally posessing arms and for promoting Tibetan independence.
Dhondup was hanged in January 2003 but Delek’s death sentence was suspended for two years. The Tibetans-in-exile said the Chinese government had not given a fair trial to Delek.
A large numbers of monks, Tibetans and other local residents rushed to watch the movie about their efforts.
Film’s Director Tenzin said the inspiration of directing a film on Delek came after watching a T-shirt with slogans written for his release. He added that the film showcased their campaign for an early release of Delek. “The sentenced is imposed on him by the Chinese government. So, basically this film shows the campaign against his trial in Dharamsala and in other parts of the country also,” said Tenzin.
Activists said till date there has been no confirmation of the monk’s hanging. Tibetans have been seeking the unconditional release of Delek.
