Latest updates that we are getting in, indicate that Ngawang Younten, one of our Delhi youth congress members, has been acutely injured and was last seen with a heavily bandaged arm being taken away to Tihar jail along with 15 other Delhi University students, 6 girls and 10 boys, following their peaceful demonstration in front of the Chinese embassy in New Delhi.
Peacefully protesting against the imminent execution of Tulku Tenzin Delek a prominent religious leader and social worker in Tibet, the group of more than 60 students were assaulted by the Delhi police and beaten mercilessly. Lathis, punches and kicks were thrown around unabated with indifference, as the girls amongst the group were equally harassed. According to eyewitnesses, the policemen continued to beat the innocent students until their lathis (bamboo Sticks) gave away and broke up. In the scuffle many of our student sustained injuries and a few had to be taken to the hospital for emergency treatment.
With the dawn of the 28th of November, the students would have spent three days inside the prison walls for expressing their desires and practicing their basic human rights.
TYC is deeply grieved and dismayed with the excessive use of force on the part of the Delhi police to curb a minor demonstration of young students armed with nothing but Tibetan national flags, banners and hearts filled with pride and nationalism.
This instance of using excessive force follows up with the events of 2001 last, when a Delhi police personnel fired a shot at a group of Tibetan students protesting peacefully against the visit of the then Chinese Prime Minister, Li Peng. The bullet stopped inches away from the chest of one of our members, perforating his arm.
TYC is greatly concerned with the appalling measures and callous dealings of the Delhi police against peacefully protesting students and strongly condemn the excessive usage of force by the Delhi police.
