Tibetan Eves Protest

Mysore, November 25 – On the occasion of the ‘International Day for the elimination of violence against women,’ hundreds of Tibetan women from Bylakuppe and Gurupura took out a rally in the city this morning, to protest against the alleged atrocities by the Chinese Government on the Tibetan population, especially the womenfolk.

Holding placards condemning the high-handed approach of the Chinese Government and the atrocities committed on Tibetan women, the protestors began the rally from the Town Hall premises at 9.30 am.

They passed through K.R. Circle, Devaraj Urs Road, Narayana Shastry Road, Irwin Road and Ashoka Road before culminating at the Town Hall.

President of Tibetan Women’s Association Ms. Dolma Yang-chen, Vice-President Ms. Dawa Dotma, Executive Members and about 350 members took part in the protest march.

Apart from their demand that the Chinese Government release all the political prisoners without any conditions, the protestors also raised slogans against the mainland China that the Tibetan women are being subjected to gender-based torture and denial of privileges to them both in education and employment sectors.

Ms. Yangchan said that the Association has submitted a memorandum to the United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC) President Ms. Mary Robinson to put pressure on the Chinese Government to work towards treating Tibetan women compassionately and provide them equal rights.
