Tibet Foundation is very pleased to announce it’s annual Tibet Foundation Day, to be held on Saturday 23rd October 2004 at the Brunei Gallery Lecture Theatre at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.

Established in 1985, Tibet Foundation works toward creating a greater awareness of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s message of peace and to further the understanding of Tibetan Buddhism and culture, and to work towards their continuity and preservation.

The UK-registered charity, whose patron is His Holiness the Dalai Lama, helps Tibetans through the provision of education and healthcare, implementing sustainable projects both in exile as well as inside Tibet. In Mongolia, the Foundation is assisting Mongolians in the revival of their Buddhist tradition, which they have shared with the Tibetan people for centuries.

Tibet Foundation Day is open to everyone, especially members and supporters of the Foundation. Guests will be able to hear from the Foundation’s Board of Trustees about the charity’s achievements in the past year as well as its future endeavours.

This year, the Foundation is very pleased to welcome Michael Wood, Writer, Historian and TV Presenter, as guest speaker for its annual event. He will speak on The Quest For Shangri-La: A Journey To Tsaparang Via The Limi Valley, about his recent travels to Tsaparang, former capital of the ancient Guge Kingdom in Western Tibet. Michael embarked on this journey to one of the most remote regions of the world to explore one of humanity’s most enduring myths for a new four-part documentary series produced by Maya Vision in collaboration with the BBC.

Live Tibetan Music
There will be a special performance of traditional Tibetan song and dance by the artistes of Gangjong Doeghar Tibetan Performing Arts based in Kalimpong, India. A young and very talented Tibetan singer Sonam Palkyi, who was born and brought up in Switzerland, will also perform a selection of her popular songs, including some from her latest album.

Buddhist Chanting
Buddhist chanting and a short ritual ceremony will be conducted by Geshe Phuntsok Tashi, abbot of the Tibetan Monastic Institute in Rikon, Switzerland. He will be accompanied by three senior monks from this famous institute, established in 1967 to maintain and promote Tibet’s unique Buddhist culture.

In the coming months, the Foundation is planning a number of further events including a celebration of the Nobel Peace Prize being awarded to His Holiness, Gaden Nga-choe (Tibetan Butter Lamp Festival), visits by Tibetan doctors from the Tibetan Medical and Astrological Institute in Dharamsala, and a UK Cultural Tour by Tibetan children from India.

These ongoing events are a part of Tibet Foundation’s Art & Culture programme. For further information about the Foundation’s cultural events and the work of Tibet Foundation, please contact Tsering Passang at:
