Foreign Relations Secretary Luis Ernesto Derbez has said Mexico may lodge a formal diplomatic protest after Chinese Ambassador Ren Jingyu called some Mexican politicians ignorant for having met with the Dalai Lama.

China’s bitter complaints about the Tibetan religious leader’s visit – which ended yesterday – came to a head at a news conference in which Ren Jingyu said meetings ”with certain political figures …. were due to their ignorance on the issue of Tibet.”

The comment was doubly irritating, given that Mexico had gone to great lengths to avoid offending the Chinese, who accuse the Dalai Lama of fomenting separatist movements in Chinese-controlled Tibet.
