Dharamsala, India, September 4 – Six Tibetan girls will compete in Miss Tibet pageant 2004. According to Lobsang Wangyal, the Producer of the event, the photos of the contestants are displayed on www.misstibet.com.
Though the details of the contestants are not yet posted on the website, the Lobsang said, “They are brave and unique six Tibetan girls who, we feel, are confident and have vision to excel in their lives.”
The six girls are Dhondup Wangmo, Kalsang Dickey, Penpa Lhamo, Sonam Dickey, Tashi Yangchen and Thinlay Dolma. However, sources say that two contestants are from Nepal and one each from Bylakuppe, Dharamsala, Delhi and Gangtok. Apparently the funding is an issue with the organisers. The website has advertised for sponsors and volunteers. The pageant will be held in Dharamsala from 8 to 10 October.
The contestants are expected to arrive in Dharamsala on 30 September for a week long training in body fitness, make-up, hair dressing and styling, catwalk, stage craft and orientation on Tibetan history, culture and current affairs. The detailed schedule of the competition is available on the website. Miss Tibet pageant has been organised as a part of the Free Spirit Festival, which was started in 2000. Another feature of the festival is said to be the Tibetan Film Festival, which is, like all other annual events initiated by the young producer, taking place for the first time. Films made by Tibetans will be the special focus of the festival and some other films related to freedom movement, social and global issues will be screened according to sources.
