YOU MAY wonder what fast-food items have to do with the Dalai Lama. For the 600-member Tibetan community in Bangalore anything associated with their spiritual leader is holy. “That is why we placed these food items in front of his portrait,” explains Ngodup Dorjee, chief representative, Central Tibetan Administration (South Zone). At a function on Tuesday to celebrate the Dalai Lama’s 69th birthday at the Tibetan Youth Hostel in Koramangala, they offered, among other things, ice cream, crisps and even soft drinks, to his portrait. And it is not just food that they arranged. They also placed fruits, flowers and money in front of the portrait.
