STUDENTS from Edinburgh University today stormed the Chinese Consulate in Corstorphine Road to protest against China’s occupation of Tibet.

The protest saw students entering the visa office of the consulate and quietly refuse to leave. Iona Liddell, 20, president of the Tibet Society and a second-year student of English literature and anthropology, said the protest was very significant.

“Forty-five years ago today, 87,000 Tibetans were killed by Chinese occupying forces who stood in front of the Dalai Lama’s palace,” she said. “We have organised this non-violent protest today to raise awareness of the issue.”

Twelve students attended the protest which took place at around 11am this morning. The Dalai Lama is scheduled to visit the Capital in May as part of his most high-profile visit to Scotland to date.
