Chandigarh, Police detained five Tibetans after a noisy demonstration here Wednesday against a Chinese delegation sparked a cane charge on the protestors.

Activists of the Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC), including boys and girls, gathered outside the DAV School at Sector 8 to protest against the visit of a Chinese delegation and raised slogans like “Free Tibet”.

It soon led to a clash between the police and the Tibetans. The Chinese went ahead with the visit, unaware of the demonstration.

Officials said the Tibetans pelted stones at the police, leading to a cane-charge.

A large contingent of police managed to keep the protestors away from the Chinese.

The Tibetans called for Tibet’s freedom and urged China to end human rights violations there.

A six-member Chinese delegation from the education department of Jiangsu province, led by its deputy director-general Ge Gaolin, is visiting educational institutions.

Last year, TYC members had jostled the Chinese ambassador to India and pushed him around when he visited a museum here.

Last week, police attacked TYC protestors with canes at Dharamsala as they began a month-long peace march to New Delhi.

India is home to the Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, who has his government-in-exile in Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh, as well as some 100,000 Tibetan exiles.
