OSLO, February 5 – A unique travelling exhibition detailing contemporary Tibetan history and prospects for the future will be shown for the first time in the Norwegian capital Oslo at Kulturkirken Jacob from February 7 to 11, 2004. This is a good opportunity to learn something or more about the past, present and future of the Tibet whose spiritual and temporal leader, the Dalai Lama, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for leading the non-violent Tibetan struggle for freedom and for his efforts at promoting world peace.
Titled “A Long Look Homeward”, this exhibition of photographs, detailed narrative text, and video clips is a journey through Tibet’s history as narrated by eleven members of the Tibetan community in exile.
The exhibition will be inaugurated by Mrs. Kesang Y. Takla, Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama for Northern Europe on February 7 at 3 pm. This will be followed by a cultural programme and screening of the well-known German film “Escape over Himalayas” by Maria Blumencron.
In Europe, this exhibition was last shown in London in January at the British Parliament in Westminster under the aegis of the UK-All Party Parliamentary Group for Tibet. The viewers learn a lot from the personal stories of the exhibition’s curators, including His Holiness the Dalai Lama, which are interwoven with the story of their nation. The rich fabric of symbols, visuals, and narrative weaves together a collective consciousness of memory, commemoration and hope.
Along with “A Long Look Homeward” exhibition, there will also be a children’s exhibition made by Tibetan children in exile and photos of SOS Children’s Villages as well as SOS Schools for Tibetan refugee children. The SOS Children’s Village, Norway, supports eight SOS Children’s Villages and seven SOS Schools for Tibetan refugees.
This exhibition is organized by the Norwegian Tibet Committee Women’s Section with support from SOS Children’s Village of Norway, Fokus (Forum for Women’s Development), Institusjonen Fritt Ord (Institute for Free Speech) and Students for Free Tibet-Norway. Many schools will be offered guided tour of the “A Long Look Homeward” exhibition.
