No improvement inside Tibet: Dalai Lama

Kolkata, November 23 – Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama today regretted that there was no improvement in conditions inside Tibet despite his renewing direct contact with the Chinese government.

The Dalai Lama was responding to a question on the present state of relationship between him and the Chinese government.

“Last September, we renewed direct contact with the Chinese government which was a good start. However, for the past one year there are no signs of improvement in conditions inside Tibet,” he added apparently referring to the human rights violation there.

The Tibetan spiritual leader reiterated that he was committed to pursuing the “middle path approach” for solving the Tibetan question and for which direct contact between his government – in – exile and the Chinese government was essential.

The Dalai Lama arrived from Delhi by a private airline this morning on a two-day visit to the city during which he would attend a function of the Vishwa Bharati here.

Elaborate security arrangements were made at the airport in view of the “very high potentiality” of threat to his life, according to a senior official.
