CHINESE President Hu Zintao should explain the torture and death of a Tibetan Buddhist monk when he visits Australia next month, Greens Senator Bob Brown said today.

President Hu is to address parliament on October 24, the day after United States President George W Bush does the same.

Both leaders will visit Australia after taking part in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders’ summit in Bangkok.

Senator Brown, a seasoned protester against the Chinese occupation of Tibet, said the Tibetan monk died after torture in a Chinese police cell.

He said a letter from the monk, detailing the torture, was released after his death in a Chinese hospital last week.

“The military occupation of Tibet and repression of political and religious freedom is an issue which must be confronted in Mr Hu’s visit,” Senator Brown said in a statement.
