Gangtok, April 27 – Hundreds of people with ‘khadas’ (scarves) in hand lined up the lanes and by-lanes of this town to bid farewell to the dalai lama who wrapped up his seven-day tour of Sikkim this morning.

During his stay, the Dalai Lama had an array of engagements in various parts of the state, including teaching sessions at the guards ground here, inauguration of a new gompa (monastery) at Chandmari, visits to about half a dozen gompas in and around Gangtok, an appearance for a public ‘darshan’ at Namchi’s Baichung Stadium, besides a visit to the 135-ft statue of Guru Padmasambhava at Samdruptse, the tallest in the world.

At his two-day teaching session here, the Tibetan spiritual leader exhorted the people to lead a more meaningful and spiritually-rich life showing greater concern and responsibility towards the society in which they lived.

The Dalai Lama, who visited the state after a gap of eight years, will stay in Siliguri today en route to Dharamsala.
